Employment Drug Testing Formats

Employment-related drug tests can be divided into two general groups. The first group is the kind most people are familiar with. This type of testing involves the donor giving a sample of some bodily fluid to an employer, doctor, law enforcement official, or a medical testing center. This is normally a sample of urine or blood.

The second group utilizes oral fluids deposited on a sterile swab or a hair sample.

Urinalysis Drug Testing

The most common form of drug testing is to analyze a sample of urine for traces of drugs. A positive test result only indicates that a drug was used sometime in the recent past; it does not tell whether or not the person was under the influence when giving the sample. For detecting alcohol, a urine test is accurate but is not used because it correlates poorly with blood levels when usual collection procedures are used.

Federal government guidelines (by NIDA -The National Institute on Drug Abuse and SAMHSA -the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration) require that companies which use commercial class driver’s licenses for employees must have a drug testing system in place. Among other things, this required testing program must test for 5 specific categories of drugs (sometimes referred to as the "NIDA 5"). Because of this federal requirement, most drug testing companies offer a basic drug test that checks for drugs in these 5 common categories.

1. Cannabinoids (marijuana, hash)
2. Cocaine (cocaine, crack, benzoylecognine)
3. Amphetamines (amphetamines, methamphetamines, speed)
4. Opiates (heroin, opium, codeine, morphine)
5. Phencyclidine (PCP)

The expanded 9-Panel Test includes the following plus the 5-Panel components:

1. Barbiturates (Phenobarbital, Secobarbitol, Butalbital)
2. Benzodiazepines (Valium, Xanax, Librium, Serax, Rohypnol)
3. Methadone
4. MDMA (Ecstasy)

Typically a donor will be directed to a local collection site (Quest Diagnostics; LabCorp; Medtox) based upon their zip code. The sample is immediately tested for temperature to determine if it is within an acceptable range. The specimen is also tested for the presence of adulterants or masking agents. A negative test usually is reported within 24-48 hours; a "presumed positive" result will go to the Medical Review Officer (MRO) for additional confirmation testing and consultation with the donor.

Oral Fluids Drug Testing

Saliva / oral fluid-based drug tests can usually identify drug abuse usage for the period of only some days. Saliva or oral fluid based drug tests are becoming more widespread since of their easy and convenient drug testing procedure and because they actually can not be adulterated. Oral fluid / Saliva based tests are as truthful as urine onsite drug tests and can be obtained from HireSafe. The saliva drug testing procedure is not gender-specific and could be performed for pre-employment, random, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, or return-to-duty testing. Results that are "presumed-positive" must be re-tested under the same conditions as a urine-based test for compliance. The re-testing procedure has an additional expense.

This saliva drug test kit is good for: Amphetamines, Benzodiazepine, Cocaine, Marijuana, Methamphetamine and Opiates.

Oral fluid (saliva) drug tests are quickly becoming the best alternative for on-site drug testing at both the home and workplace. Saliva drug testing procedure is known as a "current drug use detector" for corporate officers who want to monitor on site drugs of abuse. Advantages of oral fluid (saliva) testing using well-proven technology over traditional urine drug screening tests.

Oral fluid collection doesn't require any special facilities, specimen samples for saliva testing may be collected under direct supervision without donor privacy issues and there are impossible to cheat oral drugs testing.
Modern drug screening technology provides easy saliva test procedure and accurate drug test results. It is practically not possible to mask the drug screening saliva samples with drug consumed.

The oral fluid drug test is the interceptive test that lessens or even gets rid of the collection fees, decreases the procedural issues and broadly cut lost work time.

The test kit includes all components like, instruction card to eliminate the errors. Intake of food is not advisable prior to saliva drugs testing as some food tend to make the saliva fluid more viscous and may make the migration of saliva difficult. The advantage of saliva as a specimen of choice for drug test has been identified by psychiatrist, investigators and laboratory directors involved in monitoring drug abuse. This test does not entail any special training for collection and facilitates drug testing at a lower cost.

The saliva drug test applies a distinguished, safe and plain specimen collection procedure.
