Employment Drug Testing Formats
Employment-related drug tests can be divided into two general groups. The first group is the kind most people are familiar with. This type of testing involves the donor giving a sample of some bodily fluid to an employer, doctor, law enforcement official, or a medical testing center. This is normally a sample of urine or blood.

Urinalysis Drug Testing

Federal government guidelines (by NIDA -The National Institute on Drug Abuse and SAMHSA -the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration) require that companies which use commercial class driver’s licenses for employees must have a drug testing system in place. Among other things, this required testing program must test for 5 specific categories of drugs (sometimes referred to as the "NIDA 5"). Because of this federal requirement, most drug testing companies offer a basic drug test that checks for drugs in these 5 common categories.
1. Cannabinoids (marijuana, hash)

5. Phencyclidine (PCP)

Typically a donor will be directed to a local collection site (Quest Diagnostics; LabCorp; Medtox) based upon their zip code. The sample is immediately tested for temperature to determine if it is within an acceptable range. The specimen is also tested for the presence of adulterants or masking agents. A negative test usually is reported within 24-48 hours; a "presumed positive" result will go to the Medical Review Officer (MRO) for additional confirmation testing and consultation with the donor.
Oral Fluids Drug Testing
Saliva / oral fluid-based drug tests can usually identify drug abuse usage for the period of only some days.
