Supervisor Awareness Training

Drug and Alcohol Awareness Training for Supervisors

The Department of Transportation has specific training requirements for supervisors responsible for determining whether an employee should undergo a drug screening. Awareness training protects employees from unwarranted requests for drug testing and is incredibly necessary to ensure compliance.

If employees go to court after being terminated for failing a drug screening, your company can lose the case if supervisors are not trained.

According To DOT-FMCSA 49 CFR 382 Section 382.603 Training for Supervisors – Every employer shall ensure that persons designated to determine whether reasonable suspicion exists, in order to require a driver to undergo testing under 382.307, receive at least 60 minutes of training on alcohol misuse and 60 minutes of training on controlled substances use.

This program covers the physical, behavioral, speech, and performance indicators common with alcohol and drug abuse.

The Supervisor Awareness Training course is necessary for any hiring manager, human resources supervisor, or position tasked with determining an employee's sobriety.

This two-hour, on-line, web course, "A Supervisor's Guide to Reasonable Suspicion Testing," contains "signs and symptoms" of drug use, confrontation procedures, and much more. Chapter quizzes, a final examination, and a "Certificate of Completion" are included.

HireSafe offers two options for training:

  • Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration—Reasonable Suspicion Drug and Alcohol Testing training specifically designed to include FMCSA rules and guidance.
  • Drug-Free Workplace & Other Regulated Organizations—designed to meet Reasonable Suspicion Testing training requirements. (This training has successfully met other DOT mode inspection requirements when supplemented with regulatory specific information.)

This course ensures that if an employee does come to work under the influence, an observation by a trained specialist will withstand scrutiny in a court of law. We at HireSafe recommend the course, along with a drug testing policy, to ensure that your workplace remains drug-free.
